In 2024, Fortnite is not just a battle royale shooter—it's also an arena shooter, a racing game, a rhythm game, a survival game, and soon, a first-person shooter. Epic Games has officially begun testing a "First Person Camera Mode," now available for use in Fortnite Creative Mode and UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite).
While Fortnite creators have already employed clever tricks to simulate first-person views, these unofficial methods often felt limited. However, Epic's new official feature takes the experience to the next level. In their blog post announcing the feature, Epic states, "Workarounds, begone. The new First Person Camera Mode device enables you to create polished first-person experiences rendered from the player character’s viewpoint!"
Epic hopes that creators will use this tool to develop modes in popular genres like tactical or team-based first-person shooters, or to enhance immersion in horror and cinematic adventure games.
At present, the first-person mode is labeled "experimental," meaning players can't yet publish games using it. Early impressions suggest why—it’s promising, but clearly still in development. Epic has noted that most weapons lack proper first-person reload animations, leaving character arms vanishing off-screen during reloads. Still, existing animations look smooth, and the shooting mechanics feel solid, with sprinting, jumping, and aiming down sights working as expected.

Epic seems to be laying the groundwork for what could become a permanent fixture in the game. Once polished, a "First-person Battle Royale" playlist might join modes like Zero Build and standard Battle Royale. Whether this feature sticks around long-term, however, may depend on its popularity. Supporting first-person gameplay requires manual updates, as new animations must be created for each new weapon and tool. This could become a significant undertaking for Epic, especially as it balances other projects like creating Lego and Fall Guys versions of Fortnite skins.
For first-person Fortnite to truly succeed, the mode will need additional refinement. Even with custom animations, the current first-person experience feels more like a mod than a fully realized FPS. Gun skins and character models don’t look great up close, the field of view (FOV) feels restrictive, and Fortnite’s vast environments look somewhat off from a first-person perspective. However, with continued development and attention, this new way of playing Fortnite could become a lasting part of the game.
