Ubisoft has launched Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, a competitive, turn-based RPG with Web3 functionality. Announced in June 2023, the release surprised many who had speculated that Ubisoft might postpone or even cancel the game, as enthusiasm for blockchain-based games and NFTs has waned.

The NFT market saw a major rise in popularity in 2020, and by 2021, Ubisoft had launched Ubisoft Quartz, an NFT project aiming to turn in-game cosmetics into collectible NFTs with real-world monetary value. However, the NFT market’s decline began in 2022, with most NFTs now estimated to hold zero monetary value. Consequently, Ubisoft Quartz underperformed, reportedly bringing in only around $400. In Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, players assemble teams of three character figurines to face off in turn-based PvP combat. Figurines can be purchased with in-game currency or cryptocurrency, and players are required to link a blockchain wallet to their Ubisoft account. According to an IGN report, some figurines on the game’s marketplace are listed for as much as $63,000, while the cheapest are priced at around $7. Although new players can access temporary characters upon joining, purchasing additional figurines becomes necessary over time. The game’s exclusive PvP format and marketplace integration have raised concerns over potential pay-to-win mechanics.

Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles is available only on Ubisoft’s website, as major platforms like Steam have banned NFT and cryptocurrency content. Meanwhile, Ubisoft fans are expressing mixed reactions, particularly as other developers like Sega and EA have abandoned NFT projects.

Ubisoft's recent months have been turbulent. In September, the company launched an internal review, and in October, delayed Assassin's Creed Shadows to February 2025. There are also rumors that its free-to-play shooter XDefiant may shut down soon. Additionally, Star Wars Outlaws missed sales expectations after its August release. For many fans, Ubisoft’s move to release a blockchain game in 2024 feels out of step with the current gaming climate, leaving the company's direction uncertain.
